HOME - words & music by Nate Butler
Day ... night
The days last just as long as I say (they don't complain, do they?)
Air a sound to come around; air a sound, oh come around
Living room where the colors swoon
And the darkest shapes don't get up too soon
And a thousand wars, and as many decors
This is my new home, and I'm calling on my phone
At my house, at my house
I could not see you walk in my place (if you stood right in my face)
Anyone, come in to town; I need a guest, they never come around
Come see me, refurbish me
Where the light's so bright that no one can see
And a thousand wars, and as many decors
This is my new home, and I'm calling on my phone
At my house, at my house
At my house, at my house
Home

SNOW - Words & music by Stan Schaffer & Nate Butler, but mostly Stan.
"What's that falling from the sky?"
She asked while pointing upward
"Don't worry, it won't hurt you; only make you cold"
He told her, quite unconcerned with her perception:
"It's only frozen water."
Why should you care?
My winters past are more than yours
"Hey, you're standing in my way!" she said, "I'm fascinated
With all this frozen water."
But you forget; what if you were in her place?
Such an innocent trace, the face of an angel
And you'd believe if you would have
Seen if you could have kept that photo album
"What's that falling from the sky?" she asked while pointing upward ...
She's looking at the sky ...
It's only frozen water ... standing in my way ...

LOVE ON A SINKING SHIP - words & music by Nate Butler
I was on the banquet deck, in my second drink
I was not upset as you might think --
It's going around that we're gonna sink (ah-ha) uh-huh
The mightiest titan ever to divide the sea
Is going down tonight, and she's taking me
What a trip, any floor show this should beat
(Do you think this is so funny?)
I won't miss much; all I did at home was sleep
Saw you in the lounge
And even though my glass ain't empty, I might just as well be sipping sand ...
This is really it ... isn't it?
Always did my deepest thinking with my cock,
So it's coming up as quite a shock
This credibility in Richard Bach (good luck) uh-huh
I can't explain what causes my mind to change;
Pull away from the lifeboat in the rain
Of bodies that don't feel the seem
(Do you know you won't see the dock?)
My only regret is that I never quit smoking
Turn to look by chance
And as the rail I'm climbing over starts to shake
(Caught in the spotlight dance)
I can't help laughing at the face you make
Sunglasses and cigarettes, barstools and broomsticks
Cigarette butts and broken hearts
I'm walking across chairs to serve the water serpents in the view
... the band plays for you.
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
I'm ready to die!
You say that black is what you wear on the outside
Because black is how you feel on the inside
Well, baby, it's time to try rainbow (funny)
Ha ha, ho ho (see the dock)
Rainbow (so funny)
Ha ha, ho ho (see the dock)
(Always found in intrigue) at unknown things two thousand leagues underneath the sea
(Did not intend to seek) Atlantis, let's go down and take a peek
Far beneath the sea, this is a secret we shall keep ...
(It's a cruel world if you want it to be; it's a good life if you exit with me)
(And we go together, we go together)
(I see no good and I fear no evil)
... one confused boy ...

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC - words & music by Nate Butler
'Round here, not an adventure
Passes by your eyes, and you don't care
We're all gonna go somewhere
Grab a-hold of wildlife by the ear
You wanna share in the dividends?
I guarantee that the pace never ends with my friends!
Follow, the world is hollow, and I've touched the sky
Last our trip, cannibals marred it
Came out a wee bit missing some bodily parts
That's called navigation -- high
We're in a big apple that's ripe, take big bites!
Until the day we run out of earth,
Or fall off the edge -- whichever comes first
Casualties that we sustain compensate the wildlife we tame
The headcount's never the same!
Footsteps, never like men left; how deep then?
Man reaches for heaven
Walks on the moon, but never walked on the floors of Loch Ness
I guess that old Nessie's blessed
We'll be looking up her, like the rest of interest
If you're craving adventure, drink your fill, and we will make sure
Like National Geographic, a bit of mystery will die if you find it
So let's put our ties to the test
And we'll steer out our vessel, at best, on our way
Until the day we run out of earth,
Or fall off the edge -- whichever comes first
Casualties that we sustain compensate the wildlife we tame
The headcount's never the same!
On our way, on our way ...

NARRATOR (Mark): We take you now to the garage of your average American band, trying to find their identity in city Number 277.
STAN: Yeah, right.
DARREN: Hey guys, let's be a band.
STAN: Yeah, yeah!
NATE: Yeah, but what kind of band should we be?
JOHN: Rock out, dude: let's be like Van Halen!
STAN: Yeahhh!
(rock music starts; the band attempts to wail like metal singers)
MARK: We can play at The Zoo, man!
STAN: Oh no no, man, no: metal bands can't play at The Blue!
DARREN: But oho, but reggae bands can!
NATE: Two nights, usually!
STAN: Alright!
MARK: Yeah, mon, let's play! Yeah, mon!
STAN: We can charge $6.50, mon!
NATE: Oh, I dunno, it might work …
JOHN: Wait, there was only one Bob Marley, dudes.
WHOLE BAND: That's true, yeah.
STAN: Hey, let's just be ourselves!
WHOLE BAND: In Fresno?!
MARK: (singing “Heart of the Matter”): Does anybody belong here?
If we can be strong we belong here!
NARRATOR (Mark): And so it goes: Tales of Young Robert have found an identity. Meet them Friday, Septmber 16th, at The Wild Blue.
WHOLE BAND: Not recommended for children or Republicans!!!
DARREN: Or people who like a sixty-forty split!

HEART OF THE MATTER - words & music by Stan Schaffer
Take the life out of living, and it's not living
Take the light out of sunlight, and watch it grow dark
So much economizing, with nobody realizing
See if it stands on it's own
See if it stands ... on it's own
And everyone you depend may depend on someone too
They defend their actions with their assets
The TV sets are running; so is the population
See if it stands on it's own
See if it stands ... on it's own
Don't remind me; don't be kind to me
Let's check the heart of the matter; see if it belongs
Does anybody belong here?
If we can be strong, we belong here
But it's the middle-man who feels the pull from both sides now
Misdirection always causes pain (to the heart of the matter)
Listen to your heart, and start to realize
Don't let it stand on it's own
Don't let it stand ... on it's own
Does anybody belong here?
If we can be strong, we belong here

ALMOST ALWAYS - words & music by Nate Butler
I came to here to sulk and leer, and be my charming self
You ask me why I'm over here, when you know I came with someone else
Ha ha, ha ha, enjoy that beer; better have another
Don't look that way, you'll see our dates are probably leaving with each other
You can come with me anywhere
But let's both be considerate, and not go back in there
Heart of ice, like velcro dice; she was rusting on a shelf
I said I'd like to oil her, but the cure was something else
I guess this is what you get when you plan ahead something else's time
I thought we were made in heaven before we arrived at this place -- and I wasn't even driving
You can come with me anywhere
But I don't know a better show to ache my soul, so let's just go
Everywhere -- but in there
I came to here to sulk and leer, and be my charming self
You ask me why I'm over here, when you know I came with someone else
Ha ha, ha ha, enjoy that beer; better have another
Don't look that way, you'll see our dates have forsaken both us for each other
You can come with me anywhere
But I don't know a better show to ache my soul, so let's just go
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere -- but in there

JUST A LITTLE GIRL? - words & music by Stan Schaffer
There she is, standing across the room
Shining bright, but leaving far too soon
Who are we? The ones too far away from where she came
And we wish to be
Bringing out the happiness in other people
Isn't it a funny thing?
Making you smile like she will -- from the inside out
From the inside out
There is plenty of time with eyes that know no pain
Wanting to climb, and chase away the rain
Who are we? The ones who seed the clouds from where she came
And we wish to be
Bringing out the happiness in other people
Getting rid of tears, I guess, is only natural to her
So when you're hurting, you know where to turn
Turn and see the innocence is there
There, in the eyes, you'll see they're saying something now
Now and then you'll even understand
Something in the air; she sends an air of personality
Take a breath and see
Turn and see the innocence is there
There, in the eyes, you'll see they're saying something now
Now and then you'll even understand
Something in the air; she sends an air of personality
Take a breath and see ...
Take a breath with me.

SPEED INTENTIONS - words & music by Nate butler
I'm gonna work it out -- simple answers, matchlight
By nine you'll strung out -- beating fast through the night
Got somewhere -- hey, we have got to make it
They got to see you there -- see ya!
So they don't forget you're alive
And we go together; I push you, you push me
I'm gonna work it out -- simple answers, matchlight
By nine you'll strung out -- beating fast through the night
And we go together; I push you, you push me
And we go together, and we go together
And we go together ... we go together
Whatcha thinking now? -- borderline reaction
You ready for the bow? -- get me some relaxin'
Raped by light and sound -- can't dance any faster
I might be giving out -- wonder if I'll outlast her
And we go together; I push you, you push me
I push you, you push me
I push you, you push me

UNDER CAPRICORN - words & music by Nate Butler
If you have time to take me underwater
Closest, if you would
For us if would, and could, and shouldn't you
Listen to the good advice your high has to offer
Good news in a karma for all of us
Good fortune to see and to be with you
Once upon a time ...
Back when that was all there was
Whatever I was, wherever I was
I'm never recognized, but I remember you
Good fortune to see and to, to be with you
Some people are everywhere, some people are everywhere
Some people are everywhere, some people are everywhere
But tonight, you are my wish
But tonight ... you belong to everyone
Once upon a time ... back when that was all there was
Whatever I was, wherever I was
I'm never recognized, but I remember you
Good fortune to see and to, to be with you
Some people are everywhere, some people are everywhere
Some people are everywhere, some people are everywhere
But tonight, you are my wish
But tonight ... you belong to everyone
Everyone

ANY STREET - words & music by Stan Schaffer & Nate Butler
A is for apple, B is for Big Bird
Put them together, and it could be absurd
Painting a number (one, two, three, four, five) -- maybe a five
Count yourself, be counted alive
I am an actor (just like Robert Blake) -- a street for a stage
It could be your street, if you feel the age
Bob and Susan, Gordon too
Will feel with you and guide you through
But Mr. Hooper always finds it hard
You hardly know your ABC's or even 1-2-3's
Count yourself, be counted alive
We laugh, and sing, and learn to bring a smile to Any Street
You could be writing, learning to spell your name
Counting in Spanish, we are all the same
But when I go home, I'm wary of all the thugs I meet
In reality, you see, I work on Sesame Street
We laugh, and sing, and learn to bring a smile to Any Street
Bob and Susan, Gordon too
Will feel with you and guide you through
But Mr. Hooper always finds it hard
You hardly know your ABC's or even 1-2-3's
Count yourself, be counted alive
Alive, count yourself
Alive, count yourself
Alive, count yourself
Alive, count yourself

Train (demo 1989)

|

TRAIN - words & music by Stan Schaffer
There's a train to ride; is it heading home?
Nobody knows where it's going; it doesn't tell it on the ticket stub
Someone tore it just like at the movies
Could be "The Orient Express", or from "Wild, Wild West"
Let's hope this train is to freedom ... or something similar
SDI can wave goodbye behind me
"He said it, he said it -- the train of thought misread it"
Cup your ear like you can't hear the siren
One man knows where it's going; one man says he laid the tracks
And wants to be like his friend in the movies
Could be "The Orient Express", or from "Wild, Wild West"
Let's hope this train is to freedom
Will we understand? Will they take all the guns away?
Will we make a stand -- every person, every day?
We will see in time ... if we make the train
There's a train to ride; is it heading home?
Woo-woo ...

HONESTLY CONVINCED - words & music by Stan Schaffer
Something in the air; can you feel it there?
See it's making operating hard
In between the people and bright lights
Opens up the night, and suddenly there's nothing but silence
And you're here with me, willingly
Honestly convinced ourselves we're wrong
Letters on a page; impossible
Some coffee; try again
Fortune plays a part at the drugstore
Recognize and realize the distance
Who really knows, possibly so
We're honestly convinced ourselves we're wrong
Oh, I brought it on myself
Holding back, showing, losing 'could have hads'
With no way of knowing
(Who do you turn to when nobody listens?)
With no way of knowing at all
No way of knowing at all
Then suddenly, there's nothing but silence
And you're here with me, willingly
Honestly convinced ourselves we're wrong
Honestly convinced ourselves we're wrong
